I’ve always been deeply fascinated with the ocean therefore when I finally moved to a coastal town called Costa da Caparica, my heart instantly felt at home.
It’s truly a very special spot and I couldn’t find another brand that somehow managed to transmit the soul of the place so well as it did FLOW.ART.INK by combining the deep rooted traditions and creative modern touch.
Meet Ale and Cezar – an international couple whose brand became a true signature of the tiny serene fishermen town.
There is not much information about founders of FLOW.ART.INK, could you introduce yourself in a few words?
Hey! I’m Aleksandra from Poland and Cezar is from Brazil. We are a couple with very different backgrounds. I’m specialising in sales and was always working for big international fashion companies while Cezar is a tattoo artist and illustrator, who was and still is working with art all his life. We both lived in different countries before we met. Me in Barcelona, Spain and Cezar in Bergen, Norway.
When did you start with this project? How did you get into it? And why Costa da Caparica?
Ale: It all started in 2019. Cezar wanted to create a space where he would be able to continue his work as a tattoo artist, but also would have time to do and explore other types of art (woodcraft, linocut, etc.).
Cezar: Aleksandra joined me on my vision and added her experience with sales and management. Why Costa? We were already living in Costa da Caparica and even though I’m more kind of a “city person” we agreed on having a “slow lifestyle” closer to the ocean.
What was the biggest challenge starting your own business?
Both: Everything! (laughing) 🤣
Cezar: Have a business in Portugal is difficult 😎 but this also challenges you a lot to build your own identity.
Ale: That’s true. Everything may seem difficult at first but you should give yourself time, be consistent and stay faithful to your own vision.
What inspires your collections/ prints?
Cezar: Everything that surrounds me – “dia a dia”. Daily routine, the things that most of the people would take for granted.
How would you describe FLOW.ART.INK for those who have never heard about this project before?
Ale:FLOW.ART.INK combines tattoos, art, clothes and graffiti supplies in one spot. But for us it is more than just the store – it’s the entire lifestyle. You can find here very unique prints and clothes, get a tattoo, buy some art supplies and meet very interesting people.
Cezar: It all has began with tattoo and now is organically blending with the essence of the local vibe and all types of art.
Your main project is FLOW.ART.INK but you also have 2Flow Graffiti Shop. What is the difference between those two?
Cezar:2Flow Graffiti Shop is an extension of FLOW.ART.INK. I was always a fan of graffiti and at the beginning our idea was only to have a small display with some cans to give a support to the local artists. Yet day by day it was growing very organically therefore we have started to work with more brands and brought more products. I was tattooing for many years and I felt a huge need to express my creativity in more different ways.
FLOW.ART.INK is known for its famous fish print. How did you come up with such a beautiful and creative idea and why? What are the other unique prints that have a story to tell?
Cezar: I decided to work more on black and white design. I wanted to create a character with the local vibe. That’s how I created Escamoso. For me he represented the lifestyle of Caparica. He is some kind a fusion between fishermen and the local surfers. Most of the people at the first glance think that this is a sardine, but he is a carapau fish.
I also created different versions of him, for instance Escamoso Margem Sul, Escamoso Cova de Vapor etc. All of them are transmitting the essence of the place and making a tribute to its local life.I have also created the Caparica Sun, because of “Costa de Sol” – how local people were calling Caparica in the past. On my design you can also see CAPA RICA because of the famous legend about an old woman who dwelled upon one of those very hills here.
What are the upcoming plans / news about your project that you would like to share?
Ale: Launch our website and spread Escamoso all over the world! Create more cool designs on clothes and add some new services in our shop, and who knows, maybe to grow our tattoo team?
What do you love the most about living in Costa da Caparica?
Cezar: I like to spend time with old locals, drink a cup of coffee while listening their crazy stories / legends about how was the life back then in Caparica.
Ale: I like the local lifestyle but also we both love Caparica because it is close to Lisbon, so we can have the best from the both worlds: slow life near to the ocean in Caparica and the positive chaos, artistic vibe in Lisbon.
What are your 3 favourite places to go here in Caparica?
Ale: They are so many amazing places in Caparica that is difficult to choose only 3 🙂
What does the ocean mean to you and your project?
Cezar: Inspiration!
