It was 75th anniversary of Porsche sports cars and I was taking photos at the marina in Cascais. I was searching for some particular classic models that would stand out from the crowd and at the moment I didn’t know how lucky I was to be in the right place at the right time…
Usually in car events I don’t see people – only cars. I’m so focused on finding the right ones and getting the perfect angles that for someone staring from the outside I should look like a complete weirdo. I was taking photos of the details in the car line when suddenly I’ve heard someone talking to me. Was Bruno Henriques who asked: “Aren’t you Ocean? I follow you on Instagram, I really like your work! I came here with a friend of mine Nuno Antunes in his Porsche 944, maybe it could be a car to participate in one of your creative photoshoots!”. That’s how I met Nuno – a very kind, sincere and super professional person. After a short introduction he gave the latest number of Escape Livre magazine and I left the event smiling from ear to ear knowing that I found a very special car to work with. Today I’m very grateful and super excited to share the results and a short interview.
Could you introduce yourself in a few words?
Certainly, I’d be happy to! My name is Nuno Antunes, born in 1983 into a family with a deep-rooted connection to automobiles. My father and uncle not only established a publisher but also founded a club for organizing car events. In fact, they even started a radio program about cars that continues to this day, making it the longest-running radio program in Portugal. My father was an avid follower of events like the Rali de Portugal and Formula 1. During those different times, I would sometimes join him in the paddock, utterly captivated by the array of machines. I believe this gives you an insight into the origins of my passion for cars.
What is it to own a Porsche 944? Tell a bit more about the story behind it. When and how did you get it? Why exactly this model?
Interestingly, I acquired the 944 two years ago quite serendipitously. It happened upon a friend’s Instagram story featuring the 944, which piqued my interest due to its year of manufacture. I had always dreamt of owning a sports car from my birth year, essentially a car as old as me. I reached out to my friend, an accomplished photographer, who informed me that the car was up for sale at Garagisti, a unique car store where each car has its own well-documented story. Intrigued, I visited the store the following day to get a closer look at the car. Initially, my interest was purely informational, but Bruno, the store’s representative, was so engaging in narrating the car’s history that I found myself engrossed in conversation with him for hours. We took the car for a spin, and I was genuinely taken aback by the car’s performance – the suspension, the engine power, and the overall excellent condition of the car. It gave me much to ponder. Eventually, I discovered that the car was previously owned by a friend. I contacted him, and we struck a deal. I am now the proud owner of this Porsche 944(!) and I took the opportunity to make a series of “episodes” about the entire process that you can view on this link.
What was the biggest challenge to restore the car?
This wasn’t a complete restoration. The car had only one previous owner (excluding my friend) and was in excellent condition. Being meticulous, I made a few minor adjustments. I restored the wheels, replaced a sidelight, and repainted a side mirror. Following this, I entrusted the car to Ricardo from Reverse Lab, who took care of the rest. He performed a comprehensive polish of the windows and plastic parts, restoring their original appearance. He also carried out a full paint correction, applying a special wax, and thoroughly cleaned and hydrated the interior. The entire process is documented online in a series of articles I wrote for the Escape Livre website. After all, I’ve certified the car as a “Vehicle of historical interest” and it received a certificate of excellence, which was a moment of great satisfaction for me. It proves that the car is in a strict state of conservation and originality. If you have curiosity about all this process, you can check here.
What was your favourite #porschemoment?
I can’t pinpoint a single defining moment, primarily because I haven’t had many experiences with this car yet. However, one instance does stand out. It was when I attended a Porsche meeting and some Porsche 944 owners were completely taken aback by my car, suggesting that it might be the best 944 in Portugal. That was the moment I truly realized the exceptional nature of my 944. Now, after going through the entire process with the car, I look forward to creating many more #porschemoments.
If you would have to name 3 favourite Porsche models what they would be and why?
In my presentation about the car, I highlighted the significance of the Porsche 924 and 944 in the brand’s history. I’ve made a video available on YouTube about that. However, it would be remiss not to mention the most iconic model to date, the 911. Despite the superior driving experience offered by the 944 compared to the 1983 model of the 911, the latter remains an unforgettable and highly sought-after car. My personal favorite is the 993, the last model to feature a water-cooled engine. The Turbo version is, in my opinion, the epitome of automotive excellence. Recently, I was utterly captivated by the new GT2 RS, an incredible and perfect sports car. Following this, I would like to mention a few other models. The Porsche Boxster holds a special place in my heart, not only because I have a fondness for convertibles, but also because it was the first Porsche I ever drove. Last but not least, the Porsche Carrera 6 (906) and the Porsche 959 are ultimate collector’s items that have indelibly marked the brand’s history.
What makes you passionate about classic cars?
As a journalist, I have the privilege of driving new cars and models every day. Undoubtedly, they are safer, more practical, and more reliable. However, most of them are laden with systems, alarms, and lights. They brake autonomously and steer independently. While these features are undoubtedly helpful in daily driving, I prefer to drive without these systems. This is precisely what I admire most about classic cars. The appeal of classic cars lies in the fact that all the systems – braking, steering, acceleration, sound, and so forth – are more analog and sensory. Even the smell is distinct. It’s a truly unique experience, regardless of whether you enjoy it or not.
What are the recent projects related to motorsport you’re working on?
Since 2020, I have been serving as the Chief Editor for the website of Escape Livre. Recently, I have also participated in endurance events such as the C1 Eurocup. Occasionally, I provide track instruction for those aspiring to start racing. In addition, I collaborate in various car events. But… there’s a possibility of a significant new project commencing soon. Stay tuned(!) and follow me on Instagram @ncantunes 😊
I’ve heard that you’re running a magazine named “Escape livre“, could you tell more about how did you come up with such idea, what’s the team behind it and what’s the meaning behind the name?
The magazine was initially established to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the radio program. However, it has since evolved into more than just a car magazine. We feature a plethora of destinations, restaurants, hotels, and travel experiences that you can explore and enjoy. We also provide comprehensive coverage of all events from Escape Livre. I spearheaded the project for several years, but currently, my role is primarily focused on managing all online aspects. As I said previously, I’m the person responsible for all content management, traffic and so on… I challenge you to visit the website www.escapelivre.com.
What are your favourite driving spots in Portugal and why?
I have several favorite spots for driving. Guincho is one of them, primarily because of the stunning ocean backdrop. Another incredible place to drive is Serra da Arrábida. It’s not just a place for sporty cars, but also for SUVs or Jeeps for off-road adventures. Douro offers excellent roads that wind through breathtaking natural landscapes. Serra da Estrela is another favorite! The climb to the highest point is incredibly rewarding. And of course, we have in Portugal what is known as “The Best Road in the World to Drive”. It’s the N222 between Régua and Pinhão, specifically a 27 km section with 93 curves and stunning landscapes over the Douro Region. It’s truly a driver’s paradise.
What does the ocean mean to you?
It means freedom, nature, peace and tranquility. That’s probably why I love driving on roads next to the ocean.
